When a woman is labouring, she will have a wonderf When a woman is labouring, she will have a wonderful cocktail of hormones flooding her body...
💫oxytocin
💫melatonin
💫endorphins
...are three key players.

All three are important and will be present in abundance if the woman is calm and relaxed.

Oxytocin is the star of the show, the hormone of love and responsible for the woman’s surges, how strong they are, how long they last and how often they come. It is also known as the ‘shy’ hormone as it vanishes when a woman feels anxious, observed or not in control.

Melatonin is oxytocin’s support and will give oxytocin a boost when required…. almost like oxytocin’s cheerleader. Melatonin is produced best in the dark and we know that a woman’s melatonin levels will increase as she nears the end of her pregnancy, so a woman should consider a dimly lit room for when she is in labour to ensure her melatonin levels remain high.

Then there are our endorphins, promoted by oxytocin, they are the woman’s ‘feel good’ and pain-relieving hormone, stimulated by touch which makes massage in labour great. Endorphins like love and laughter.

As you can see these three magical hormones are intrinsically linked and dance together through the woman’s body as she labours and births, for a woman to produce this wonderful cocktail she needs to feel safe, loved, unobserved and undisturbed.

We look at hormones and how to encourage this cocktail as part of our antenatal course.

An absolute corker of a blog post for you today! M An absolute corker of a blog post for you today! Midwife Sally has written all about Cesarean Sections and General Anaesthetics, along with @thebacktofronthouse birth story. Laura found when preparing for her section that there was very little information or birth stories out there to read, so by sharing her incredible story she hopes to help others.

The blog covers...
✨What is a Caesarean Section and how is it performed?
✨Recent statistics
✨Why Caesarean sections are required
✨Caesarean section with general anaesthetic.
✨Recovery
✨Skin to skin
✨Side effects
✨Vaginal Seeding
✨Weeks following your caesarean.
✨Laura and Peter’s birth story.

From the blog...
“For this little piece, I want to focus upon an emergency Caesarean Section (c/s) being done under general anaesthetic – as there appears to be little information around. It is something that you will not be planning for as such – especially not if you are planning upon using hypnobirthing techniques, whereby only concentrating on positive birth stories and a controlled water birth scenario. However this will be good to read at some stage to store somewhere in you sub conscious mind, just in case...because it is good to be informed.

Read Laura and Peter’s amazing birth story to hear just how wonderful their birth experience was. They had an emergency c/s under a general anaesthetic for a pulmonary embolism, at term. She looks amazing following birth and is an inspiration to us all. Having planned extensively for a natural, drug free birth, both Laura and husband, Peter, re-routed their pathway in order to have their beautiful little son – as a matter of urgency. She relays feeling ‘in control’ and ‘confident’, despite the surrounding heightening anxiety levels, amongst the health professionals and that her birth experience was brilliant.

Laura literally experienced the complete opposite birth than they had both planned for. They had an emergency procedure incorporating so much technology and intervention but because they felt involved and safe were able to enjoy and embrace their experience of childbirth.”

T H R E E When we think about and plan for birth T H R E E

When we think about and plan for birth it can sometimes be from a one-dimensional, practical approach. What do I need? What car seat is best? What pram? But if only we realised birth will not flow and be a positive experience based on these practical decisions, regardless of what you have packed in your hospital bag.

Birth is a combination of THREE things, all of which need to be approached and planned for with equal thought and attention...

💫 Birth is a physical act
💫Birth encompasses our spirit and mind.
💫Birth is physiological

All of these three must be balanced and in tune for labour and birth to flow uninterruptedly.

The PHYSICAL element is very often the part a couple will focus on, during our courses we hear discussions linked to how a woman’s body will birth their baby from a physical perspective. This element is not only about the day we birth, it begins with a woman’s general health, does she have any other medical issues? It includes how your body and baby work together, how your baby descends through the pelvis, how a woman moves and so much more.

The SPIRITUAL element includes how a woman feels about labour and birth in the present and also her previous experiences of labour and birth. A woman’s emotions will be influenced by her past experiences, her relationships and also how she has prepared and gathered information prior to her birth.

The PHYSIOLOGICAL element includes the rhythm of the body, the way hormones are produced and influence the body and this element will also encompass outside influences such as the environment and those who are supporting the woman.

It is vital that all three of these elements are nurtured and encouraged throughout, they need to be seen as a collective and not individual items, they need to be seen as related and ineffectual without one another.
